ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls basketball team eclipsed its total offensive output of the previous three quarters in the game’s final eight minutes in Bath’s 51-36 win over St. Marys.

The loss is the Riders’ third straight, but St. Marys head coach Kelly Fulmer called it a big step forward in her team’s maturation.

“Through the season we’ve had thus far, to be able to see them come out and play against a good team and play them tough, it’s a great thing,” Fulmer said.

Kelly Heitkamp scored a team-high nine points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting to lead the Roughriders. Reagan Aller added eight points and Ashleigh Falk had seven points.

St. Marys (2-8, 0-4 WBL) entered the fourth quarter down 40-16 — not an unexpected margin with Bath (10-1, 4-0 WBL) returning almost everyone from last year’s co-WBL champion team and St. Marys rebuilding with a 2-7 record.

The Roughriders cut into that lead with a 10-0 run that carved the lead to 44-29 and had Bath head coach Greg Mauk in a testy mood on the sideline. Mauk first called time out to get his starters back in the game and when they didn’t respond he pulled all his regulars and played the end of his bench to close out the game.

“Bath is a great team and we made Bath do some things they didn’t want to do,” Fulmer said. “We got a lot of confidence. We played hard for the entirety of the game, we had patience at times and got some good looks and defensively we got our hands on some balls.”

Audrey Brandon led Bath with 12 points. Katie Dackin added eight points. Emily Ruhe scored seven points.

St. Marys hosts New Bremen on Saturday at 1 p.m.
