Friday Night's Local Games
Elida 37, Eastmoor Academy 10
WAPAKONETA — Elida sacked Eastmoor Academy nine times and a fumble recovery in the final 30 seconds of the first half helped lift the Bulldogs to a 37-10 win over Archie Griffin's alma mater in a Division III Regional Championship game at Harmon Field in Wapakoneta on Friday night.
“When we were able to get off the ball and around their big guys on the line, it was party at the quarterback,” Elida head coach Jason Carpenter said.
It's Elida's first-ever regional championship in three playoff appearances.
Elida's Mitch Knotts scooped up a fumble near midfield and returned it for a touchdown of over 40 yards untouched, dousing any momentum Eastmoor built by sacking Reggie McAdams in the end zone for a safety a few minutes before.
“The defense just played lights out,” Carpenter said.
Elida cruised in the second half, despite pedestrian numbers from the offense.
Reggie McAdams went 12-for-28 for 119 yards passing for Elida. He hit wide receiver Austin Etzler twice for touchdowns.
Anthony Sumpter led Elida with 47 yards rushing on two carries, including a 44-yard fourth quarter touchdown to cap the scoring. Elida's Colin Blymyer added 18 rushes for 45 yards on the ground.
“We needed to take care of the ball and we didn’t,” Eastmoor Academy head coach James Miranda said. “When you give them good field position over and over again, you’re not going to have a good result.”
Elida will face Springfield Shawnee next Friday night in a state semifinal match-up at a place to be determined by the OHSAA.
Coldwater 28, West Jefferson 6
PIQUA — Coldwater rolled up 493 yards of total offense and the Cavaliers scored 28 unanswered points to deliver a 28-6 win over West Jefferson at Piqua's Alexander Stadium on Friday night in a Division V regional championship game.
“In the second half we came back and got some good mismatches,” Coldwater head coach Chip Otten said. “We also made and caught some great throws and we are moving on.
"Everybody wants to win and you have to be patient when things don’t go well and keep moving forward," Otten added.
Coldwater junior quarterback Austin Bruns went 13-of-20 for 337 yards passing with three touchdowns and one interception. He connected with Caleb Siefring four times for 145 yards and two touchdowns. The QB-wideout duo has connected for six touchdowns in the past two weeks of the playoffs. Siefring scored on touchdown catches of 15 and 68 yards.
The Coldwater defense held West Jefferson to just 185 yards of total offense.
The Cavaliers will be playing Hicksville at a place yet to be determined next Friday. Hicksville defeated Patrick Henry 34-7 on Friday at Lima Stadium.
