Boys Basketball
Kenton at St. Marys
The only two teams in the Western Buckeye League without a win open the league schedule. For Kenton, it’s also a season opener after its first two games were postponed because of its football run. St. Marys’ Garet Fledderjohann returned to the line-up lastFriday night and scored 17 points. J.D. Meyer averages 11 points per game for the Riders from his forward position. Kenton is led by a trio of returning senior starters that includes Maty Mauk at guard and Brice Fackler at forward. Kenton scored 61.8 points per game last season.
Celina at Ottawa-Glandorf
A key early match-up in the WBL will be contested in the very first week of the season when the Bulldogs go to Ottawa to face Tyson McGlaughlin’s Titans. Look for a barnburner, as the teams were the top two scoring offenses in the WBL a season ago. Celina won last year’s match-up 62-59. Scott Moeder scored a career-high 23 points last Friday night in a 74-67 win over Canton Linden McKinley at the Fieldhouse.
Wapakoneta at Elida
Elida carries a four-game winning streak against Wapakoneta and a 4-0 start to the season into Friday night’s WBL opener. Led by the prolific outside game of Reggie McAdams and Dakota Mathias (who missed last weekend’s game with an injury) and the inside power of post player Cory Royster, Elida has outscored opponents by nearly 24 points per game so far. Wapakoneta has struggled defensively, giving up 58.7 points per game in its 1-2 start — including surrendering 70 points to Ada last Friday night in a loss.
Del. St. John at Minster
Delphos St. John’s has historically played well against Minster, going 28-10 against the Wildcats in their 38 meetings. That included a five-game winning streak by the Blue Jays from 2006 until last year’s district semifinal win by Minster.
New Bremen at Coldwater
New Bremen’s match-ups over the past half decade have been low-scoring and competitive. Only once over the past six seasons has a team scored more than 56 points when the Cardinals and Cavaliers tangle. Coldwater has won the last two meetings. Coldwater got a late start to the season after their football run to the state title game. While they’re rounding into hoops shape, they’ll count on Austin Bruns, who averaged 11.7 points per game to lead last year’s 6-16 squad. Bruns, Mark Brunet and Alex Bruggeman each scored 10 points apiece in Coldwater’s opening loss to Van Wert. Aaron Clune and Derek Bornhorst are averaging 9.5 points per game to lead the Cardinals.
