Fred G. Swartz, 77, of 11103 State Route 364, St. Marys, died at 12:35 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at his residence.
He was born on April 5, 1934, in St. Marys, the son of Sam and Cynthia (Davis) Swartz, and they preceded him in death.
On Nov. 24, 1954, he married Janet Quellhorst, and she survives at the residence.
He is survived by his two sons, Gary (Jennifer) Swartz of St. Marys and Sam (Angie Manarolla) Swartz of Dublin; six grandchildren, Samantha Swartz, Jordyn Swartz, Dillon Swartz, Griffin Swartz, Marcus Manarolla and Lucas Manarolla; one great-grandson, Brayden Swartz; his siblings, Charles (Sue Ellen) Swartz of St. Marys, Sam Swartz of St. Marys and Melody Thrush of St. John’s.
He was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Charles Siferd, Glen Thrush and Edward Quellhorst; a daughter-in-law, Becky Swartz; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Swartz.
Fred was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War.
He retired from Midwest Electric Cooperative in St. Marys, where he was a controller/office manager. He also was the owner of Fred’s Income Tax Service in St. Marys.
He was an excellent woodworker and furniture maker. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapshooting and skeet. He was a life member of Eagles Lodge 767 in St. Marys. He loved collecting World War I and World War II memorabilia and later donated his collection to the Auglaize County Historical Museum. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.
Fred enjoyed spending the last 18 winters in Bonita Springs, Fla., where he had many friends.
Funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, with the Rev. Ed Bray officiating.
Burial, with military honors, will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where memorial donations may be directed to St. Paul’s United of Christ Endownment Fund or to Grand Lake Hospice.
