Foxhoven Named Interim SSD

January 30, 2013

ST. MARYS — The city of St. Marys will have a familiar face serving as its interim safety-service director.

St. Marys Mayor Pat McGowan told The Evening Leader Eric Ostling is no longer the safety-service director for the city, effective immediately. St. Marys Police Chief Greg Foxhoven will serve as interim safety-service director. Ostling was hired in October to succeed Jason Little, who was hired in March but announced his resignation in August.

“I’ve decided to go another direction,” McGowan said, declining to comment as to the nature of his decision. “I think that we have three candidates that are really good inside the building ... Greg is an excellent administrator and he’s well respected.”

St. Marys Police Sgt. Tim Eberle will serve as interim police chief while Foxhoven serves as interim safety-service director.

McGowan will now be tasked with reopening the search for a new safety-service director. McGowan also expressed a desire to have city councilors re-examine the qualifications for the safety-service director. Under city ordinance, a safety-service director must hold a professional engineer distinction.

“Only council can do that,” McGowan said of changing the qualifications. “Personally, I feel the job is much more suited to a manager versus an engineer. Having engineering capabilities is good, but managerial skills, in my opinion, are paramount.”
