NEW BREMEN — Two years ago Fort Recovery had a chance at the outright MAC title, but after a lengthy delay because of fire alarms, new Bremen came back to spoil the party and share a piece of the title.

This time the Indians stayed out of theblotter and atop the MAC standings.

The Indians built just enough cushion in the first half and defeated the New Bremen Cardinals 62-56 Friday night in the final regular season game for both teams. The Indians’ win gave them the outright Midwest Athletic Conference title with an 8-1 record and 18-2 overall.

“I was glad there were no fire alarms pulled today,” Fort Recovery head coach Brian Patch said. “Anytime you can win this conference it is special because I think it is harder to win this conference than going through the tournament because every night you have to be prepared and this was a culmination of our season and success and we still understand that the work is not done yet and we know we will face another MAC team again next Friday and we have to be ready.”

“I thought they were a little more physical than we were tonight,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “We didn’t play as physical early as we needed to and we didn’t attack the boards. They get a couple loose balls that we didn’t get and that was the big difference tonight.”

Jared Kahlig was the workhorse for the Indians as he scored 22 points and Wade Gelhaus had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Elijah Kahlig also had 10 points for the Indians.

“Jared didn’t know if he was going to play tonight,” Patch said. “He hurt his knee the other day in practice and for him to come out and step it up like he did it was a great job.”

Fort Recovery (18-2, 8-1) will face the winner of the Minster-New Knoxville game next Friday at Coldwater, while the Cardinals (12-8, 4-5) will face Marion Local on Wednesday in the second game at 7:45.
