MINSTER — The Minster Wildcats and New Bremen Cardinals returned on Saturday to finish what they started on Friday. Minster running back Korey Schultz and the Wildcats dominated both nights in Minster’s 51-19 win.
Schultz rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.
“He averaged about 10 yards a carry and that was pretty good,” said Minster head coach Nate Moore.
Minster led 21-0 early in the second quarter when play resumed on Saturday.
Niemeyer busted a run for 40 yards bringing the ball down to the Cardinals 25 early in Saturday’s action. Five plays later Devon Poeppelman went in for a one-yard touchdown run making the score 28-0 with 6:26 left in the second quarter.
“We dug ourselves a hole early,” New Bremen head coach Jason McGaharan said. “You can’t do that against a MAC team like Minster.”
The Cardinals finally broke out of their slump taking the kickoff at the 22 and with the passing and running of quarterback Garrett Westerbeck drove the field with Justin Heitkamp’s seven yard pass from Westerbeck culminating the nine-play, 78-yard drive . The extra point by Trey Naylor made the score 28-7 with 2:26 left.
Minster led by that score at half.
Minster picked off two passes in the third quarter and turned them into with a 29-yard touchdown run by Schultz and a 25-yard field goal by Poeppelman to expand the lead to 38-7 with 3:45 left in the third.
Troy Kauffman opened the fourth quarter by breaking loose broke loose for the touchdown making the score 44-7.
Westerbeck lofted a perfect pass to Parker Manger streaking down the sideline for a 71 yard touchdown. The extra point failed making the score 44-13.
New Bremen made Minster punt for the first time and promptly moved the ball on the ground and scored on a 12-yard run by Alex Speelman. The kick failed making the score 44-19 with 3:35 left.
But Minster’s Kauffman went through the Cardinal defense for an 82-yard kickoff on the ensuing kick, making the final score 51-19.
Minster built a 21-0 lead on Friday night with a Schultz six-yard touchdown run, a Niemeyer six-yard touchdown run and a Schultz 54-yard rushing touchdown.
