MINSTER — In a battle of playoff teams the Minster Wildcats took advantage of five Delphos St. John’s turnovers and defeated the Blue Jays 21-14 in overtime Friday night at Minster in the final regular season game.

“You can’t fumble in games like this,” Delphos head coach Todd Schulte said. “If we don’t turn the ball over, we don’t make the game as tough.”

“Turnovers were obviously the key to the game tonight,” Minster head coach Nate Moore said. “Delphos is going to wake up tomorrow and know they had a chance to win the game. It was a hard, hard, hard fought game and we were lucky to come out on top and I’m proud of our guys.”

It came down to overtime for both teams. The Wildcats began the overtime period on the 20 and it took only two passes from Adam Niemeyer to Devon Poeppelman to score a touchdown. The extra point kick by Poeppelman gave Minster the 21-14 lead.

Delphos took possession and moved the ball after an incompletion, on a run by Mark Boggs, Troy Warnecke and a fourth down run by Warnecke. At the 10, Boggs ran for a four yard and a one yard gain, but a pair of incompletions ended the game for the Wildcat victory.

“We could never gain control of the game,” Schulte said. “You have to give Minster credit because they have a good football team, but then we just didn’t help ourselves with the turnovers. We have a tendency to do that. I told the kids before the game that the key is taking care of the football and getting turnovers and tonight we did the exact opposite.”
