COVINGTON — Running was the name of the game for the Covington Buccaneers Friday night in the opening game of the 2012 football season against the New Bremen Cardinals.

Junior A. J. Quellette did the running for the Buccaneers with 27 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns as Covington defeated New Bremen, 27-7.

“They run the ball very well,” Cardinals head coach Jason McGaharan said. “They pride their entire program around that triple option attack. We talked as a team this week that you have to do your job and it is hard to stop that attack when there is three players who could run the ball. All they need is one person not to do their job and they can capitalize.”

New Bremen quarterback Garrett Westerbeck went 8 of 17 for 115 yards passing.

New Bremen has its first home game next Friday when it hosts Ft. Loramie, while Covington travels to Mississinawa Valley next Friday.
