NEW BREMEN — Anna’s Nick Doseck intercepted a pass to preserve a 21-13 Rocket victory at New Bremen on Friday.
We thought we could get a matchup on the backside and we though our athlete was better than theirs but they double covered him and my quarterback had nowhere else to go and he tried to make something happen and that one is on me," Cardinals head coach Jason McGaharan said.
With 4:42 left in the game Anna had the ball at their 20 and moved the ball out to the 35 but a holding penalty stymied the Rockets and they were forced to punt from their 31 with 2:12 left.
Starting at their 29 New Bremen dr.ove to the 30 with 1:25 left and Westerbeck threw a key 17-yard pass to Carson Manger and when the Rockets were called for a late hit that moved the ball to the Rocket 38 with 1:17 left. After a couple of incompletions, Westerbeck was flushed out of the pocket and tried to hit Manger over the middle but Nick Doseck intercepted the ball sealing the victory.
“I am very, very proud of the player’s effort tonight,” McGaharan said. “I thought their focus was fantastic and the preparation for the game was out of this world and they continue to fight and scratch and they realize last week wasn’t their best effort and that wasn’t reflective of what they want New Bremen football to be like. I give a lot of credit to my coaching staff and a lot of credit to the players.”
Anna's Christian Williams he rushed 30 times for 246 yards and two touchdowns.
“Our guys fought and scratched and played 48 minutes of football tonight,” McGaharan said. “I don’t fault their effort one bit but every week in the MAC is a dog fight and we made the plays against Parkway and Fort Recovery but tonight we have to make the plays when we have the opportunities. I think we will do that in these final two weeks and the kids have a lot left in the tank.”
The Cardinals (2-6, 2-4) will travel to Delphos St. John’s next Friday, while the Rockets (4-4, 2-4) will travel to Marion Local.
