ST. MARYS — The United Way of Auglaize County is raising awareness about hunger in the community as well as helping restock area food pantries with its annual food drive this weekend.
The United Way of Auglaize County’s fourth annual Christmas in July Food Drive will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday at markets around Auglaize County. United Way of Auglaize County Director Randy Fisher said the food drive has two goals.
“This food drive accomplishes two major things,” he said. “First, it raises awareness for hunger in the summer months. People in our community are extremely generous around Christmas time and Thanksgiving — they’re very giving to our food pantries. Those folks who are hungry in November, December and January are just as hungry in June, July and August, so we’re raising awareness for year-round hunger through our Christmas in July Food Drive.”
In addition to raising awareness of hunger in the community, the food drive also helps stock the shelves of area food pantries.
“The second thing is we’re restocking our food pantry,” Fisher said. “The summer time is one of their busiest times of the year because kids are home from school and they’re feeding more people. Our community relies on the food banks during the summer time, so we’re going to restock their stores.”
The food drive, which is in its fourth year, has made an impact in the past.
“In 2011, we raised enough food to feed 400 people for two days,” Fisher said.
“That’s a major undertaking for our community.”
