ST. MARYS — Firefighters from four area departments spent close to five hours battling a blaze that destroyed a barn along Lambert Road Saturday night.
At approximately 9:01 p.m. Saturday, several calls came into the St. Marys Fire Department reporting a barn fire at 15373 Lambert Road, St. Marys. When crews arrived, they found a barn engulfed in flames.
"Our main concern was the surrounding buildings so we were protecting those exposures," St. Marys Firefighter Jason Noonan told The Evening Leader. "The barn was a total loss."
The barn contained approximately 500 bushels of corn cobs as well as a pick-up truck. Noonan said the corn cobs kept crews busy for hours.
"That just burns and smolders," Noonan said. "You have to clear all that out."
St. Marys Township, New Knoxville and Celina provided mutual aid. Noonan said tankers were needed to provide an adequate water supply to fight the fire.
No one was injured and crews cleared the scene at 1:55 a.m. Sunday. The cause of the fire remains undetermined and no estimate on the loss was available.
