November 23, 2011

FINDLAY — A pair of former New Knoxville Rangers went head-to-head in early season college basketball action when the University of Findlay faced Cedarville on Tuesday night.

Former Ranger and Findlay junior Brad Piehl and the Oilers emerged with a 90-84 win over Marcus Reineke and Cedarville.

Reineke went 5-for-5 from beyond  the three-point arc and scored a team-high 17 points for the Yellow Jackets. Reineke, a freshman guard, came off the bench and went a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor.

Piehl started at center for Minster-native Charlie Ernst’s Oilers and scored nine points to go along with two rebounds, four assistsand three steals  in 18 minutes on the floor.

The game was Findlay’s first at home since it had its 77 home game winning streak snapped by Malone last week.

Findlay shot 54 percent from the floor to earn the win.

Former Fort Recovery standout Greg Kahlig scored a game-high 26 points for Findlay. Kahlig went 10-of-14 from the floor and added four steals.

Both Findlay, a NCAA Division II school, and Cedarville, an NAIA school, are 3-1 on the season.

Findlay is coached by Charlie Ernst, the Minster native and longtime assistant under Ron Niekamp. Ernst took over as head coach in March.

Findlay hosts Illinois-Springfield on Monday, Nov. 28, while Cedarville will travel to Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan on Saturday.
