FFA offers fruit

October 21, 2011

NEW BREMEN — Students of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) will be traveling around New Bremen this month for their annual fall fruit sale.

The sale, which runs through Nov. 14, helps the group pay for various activities it participates in throughout the year.

“The money raised goes toward the chapter in general and helps pay for trips, contests and leadership conferences,” Adviser Katy McGovern said. “It’s a general fund that helps to cover our students’ costs.”

The New Bremen FFA will be selling a slew of fruits and Ohio-made products.

“Every fall we sell all citrus fruit including navels, tangerines and grapefruit, and we have also expanded into some other things over the years,” McGovern said. “We sell pears, pineapples, Ohio grown apples and we also sell B.D. Yummer’s Barbecue Sauce, which is a company in Ohio, along with Kuck’s Smoked Turkeys, out of St. Marys.”

She noted that the Christmas mix and tangelos are two of the group’s most popular items.

“Our Christmas Mix is a mix of navels, tangelos and grapefruit,” McGovern said. “We mix that all in a box. It’s probably one of our biggest sellers.”

McGovern said FFA students will be going door-to-door in New Bremen to sell the fruit and will also be selling to area businesses.

“They have been broken into teams and they’re going door-to-door,” she said. “They will be selling to businesses as well. We’ve divided up businesses amongst the kids to go to.”

She noted that she will also take phone orders.

“We also take phone orders, if people want to call the (New Bremen) high school, we’ll take those as well,” McGovern said.

McGovern noted that the fruit is expected to arrive between Nov. 28 and Dec. 3. She noted that the annual fundraiser can help students who participate in FFA through the tough economic times.

“It’s a good fundraiser for kids to get some extra money in the chapter so we can help them,” she said. “It’s a tough time economically for families, and having multiple kids in our program can become a big cost. It’s a good way for the kids to raise some money and make some commission.”
