EMA Runs Drill

June 1, 2013

ST. MARYS — Dozens of first responders, utility workers, county officials and other emergency personnel gathered in St. Marys and Wapakoneta on Saturday to run through a training scenario that tested how prepared each segment was in the event of a disaster.

The Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency hosted the training session as a way to prepare for the unexpected. In St. Marys, crews went through a training scenario that mirrored last year’s wind event and in Wapakoneta, crews tested their response to a semi spill that included the threat of explosion and a massive evacuation.

“My daily fear with the job is worrying about what would happen if we had an event like in Oklahoma and what we would do,” Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson told The Evening Leader. “The plans that I have written, and the other agencies who have helped write those plans, I think those are key.”

The EOC was open and full of activity in the basement of the Auglaize County Council on Aging. In one room, a dozen people worked phones and updated other personnel about power outages and shelter locations. In another room, a group of people monitored the weather and gave updates via the radio.
