Eleanor M. Smith, 91, of Defiance, died on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center in Defiance.

She was born on March 1, 1920, in Williams County, to Vern and Cora (Shull) Page, and they preceded her in death.

On Feb. 26, 1939, she married William Lane Smith, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1999.

She is survived by two sons, DeLane (Mary Gregory) Smith of Defiance and Terry “Ted” Smith of Ney; two daughters, Carol (John) Schlosser of St. Marys and Marilyn (Merlyn) Wiemken of Defiance; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, June Shankster; a great-grandson.

She was a member of Farmer United Methodist Church. She was also involved in Hearts and Hands Club, Defiance Extension, Defiance County Farm Bureau Council and the Williams County Historical Society. She was the founder and co-administrator of Leisure Oaks Nursing Home in Defiance and an investor and former administrator of Fountain Manor Nursing Home in Hicksville. She got great satisfaction out of caring for the elderly. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren and bird watching.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Farmer United Methodist Church in Farmer, with the Rev. Ron Adkins officiating. Burial will be held in Farmer Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance.
