Elbert L. Baird, 88

Elbert L. Baird, 88, of 11309 Bobwhite Lane, St. Marys, died at 12:39 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

He was born on Jan. 25, 1923, in Old Washington, to Charles M. and Vera A. (Boyd) Baird, and they preceded him in death.

He is survived by two stepsons, James J. Hammann of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Joseph P. Hammann of Tipp City; two nephews, Charles (JoAnn) Baird  of Old Washington and Mervin (Barbara) Baird of Old Washington; numerous great-nephews and great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorcas (Woolley) Baird; his  wife, Marjorie (Potter) Hammann-Baird; his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Elizabeth Baird.

He was a 1941 graduate of Old Washington High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He spent his entire career working in the lumber industry. He began  with a lumber yard in Quaker City  from 1948-1952, then Hoge Lumber in New Knoxville from 1952-1964.

He finished his career at Anna Lumber Co. in Anna, where he retired as manager.

He was a member of New Knoxville United Methodist Church.

He served as a scout master for Boy Scouts of America for many years.

He was a very active resident/ volunteer at Otterbein – St. Marys.

A master woodworker, he was instrumental in the completion of numerous projects at the campus. He was also proud to have restored a 1963 Pontiac Catalina.

Funeral rites are scheduled  for 10:15 a.m. Monday at Meyer Community Chapel of Otterbein – St. Marys, with the Rev. Dennis Gaertner officiating. Burial will follow at the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Monday at Otterbein.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Otterbein benevolent fund.

Arrangements are entrusted to Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the professional staff at Otterbein-St. Marys, Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Rita’s Medical Center and St. Rita’s Hospice for the wonderful care given to Elbert during his illness.
