Drowning At Grand Lake St. Marys

Montezuma Fire Chief Ron Schulze reports that his department was dispatched to a missing child report at 6339 State Route 703, just west of Montezuma at 7:34 a.m. Saturday. Sheriff's deputies had been dispatched and it believed the child had wandered away from home early this morning. Schulze requested assistance from Chickasaw, Coldwater, Celina, St. Marys Township, St. Henry, Osgood, Burkettsville, South West Mercer, Mendon, and Rockford Fire Departments. Also assisting were Mercer County Sheriff's Office, Auglaize County Sheriff's Office, ODNR-Division of Watercraft, MCERV and Coldwater EMS. Lutheran Air Ambulance also assisted with a helicopter.
Missing was Jade Riggs, 10, from 6339 State Route 703. She was last seen at approximately 5:30 a.m. Saturday when her grandfather left for work. More than 90 responders searched the area woods, fields, and water. At approximately 1:56 p.m., firefighters who were searching the channel located Jade deceased in the water.
It is believed that when she woke up she went outside. She loved to go to the water and throw stones in. It is believed that she fell in the water at that time. The Montezuma Fire Department would like to thank all the Fire Departments and other agencies for their assistance.
"Although we would have preferred a different outcome, we appreciate the support of the public when we ask them to stay away and let us do our job," Schulze said in a news release.
