Dr. Duane N. Sunderman, 83, of Hilliard, passed away suddenly on Friday, July 22, 2011.
He was born on July 14, 1928, in Wadsworth, to Richard B. and Caroline N. Sunderman, and they preceded him in death.
He was married to Joan H. Sunderman for 58 years, and she survives him.
He is survived by a daughter, Christine (Jeff) Boruvka; two sons, David D. Sunderman and Richard G. Sunderman; a sister, Betty (Jim) Dillon; four grandchildren, Katie (Chris) Buckholtz, Elise Boruvka, Holly Sunderman and Michelle Sunderman; a niece, Debbie (Paul) Yeoman; a nephew John Dillon.
Duane was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Lynn Cuccaro Sunderman; a niece, Brenda Dillon Davis.
He graduated from Fort Wayne North Side High School.
He received his A.B., M.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Michigan and graduated from the Harvard Business School Program for management development.
He served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Kearsarge (CV-33). He later served as an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
He was the former director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), director of Kansas City Operations for Midwest Research Institute and worked for 28 years in research and management roles for Battelle Memorial Institute.
He was a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Testing and Materials. He was a founding member of the Hilliard Presbyterian Church and a former choir member, elder and usher of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Covenant Presbyterian Church permanent funds ministry.
