MINSTER —  Austin Knapke is no ordinary number three in a rotation.

Minster's senior starter got the ball with injuries afflicting the Wildcats' top two starters and tossed a five-inning no-hitter in Minster's 10-0 win over Fort Recovery in a Division IV sectional title game.

“Throughout the course of these last two weeks we had Adam Niemeyer not be able to throw because of an elbow,” Minster head coach Mike Wiss said. “Last night Doug Huber had a ball hit off his right thumb and he is now getting X-rays. Austin was pitcher number three. That is not the way you draw it up.

Knapke gave up no hits through five innings and went just one batter above the minimum in Minster’s 10-0 win over Fort Recovery.

Trey Rutschilling of St. Henry dominated the second game. Rutschilling struck out 13 in St. Henry’s 6-0 win over New Bremen.

Minster (20-6) will play the winner of Ottoville and Spencerville next Wednesday at Coldwater at 4:30, while St. Henry (13-11) will face the winner between Spencerville and Lincolnview in the second game at 6:45.

“This is two tournament games and two shutouts for our pitching staff,” St. Henry head coach John Dorner said. “Trey got himself into a couple of situations, but he was able to concentrate and he was able to work his way out of them. I went out there both times and challenged him and he responded.”

New Bremen threatened in each of the first three innings getting a runner to third with one out in the first, a runner to second in the second and had the bases loaded in the third where they had a runner thrown out at the plate.

“When we had the guys on base,” Cardinals head coach Greg Cox said. “The guys at the plate didn’t deliver. We didn’t hit the ball and we struck out. We ended the majority of the innings striking out.”
