Deputies Investigating Apparent Suicide

CELINA — Deputies are investigating the apparent suicide of a Rockford man in northern Mercer County.

According to a news release issued by Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey, deputies were dispatched to Township Line Road, north of U.S. 33, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday via a 911 call received by Van Wert County authorities.

The Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office contacted Mercer County Dispatch after receiving a call from an individual who advised he had just shot himself.  Upon deputies arrival, they found Michael L. Moulton, 51, of 9953 Township Line Rd., Rockford, inside his vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

A firearm and shell casing was recovered inside the vehicle. Moulton was transported to the Van Wert County hospital by Rockford Squad No. 4, who was assisted by a medic from the Celina Fire Department. He was later transferred to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne, where he died from his injuries at 12:10 p.m. Thursday.

The incident remains under investigation.
