David Lyle Burnett, 72, of Spencerville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at his daughter Amber (Patrick) Wise’s residence in Tolleson, Ariz.. His death was the result of a rapid and progressive battle with cancer.
Born on Aug. 6, 1941, in Van Wert County, he was the son of Elmer “Butch” and Alice (Hirn) Burnett, both of whom preceded him in death. He also goes home with our Lord to be reunited with sisters, Shirley Ann Ruff and Lynda Carol Sudman.
David was a graduate of Memorial High School in St. Marys, class of 1959. He spent the majority of his career working for the Ford Motor Company. He retired in 2004 with more than 40 years of service at Ford.
He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed snow skiing and loved horses and thoroughbred horse racing. He also enjoyed going to the casino and always hoped to “hit the big one.”
David was a loving father to Amber Wise, and sons Nicholas Paul Burnett of Georgia and Donald David Burnett of South Carolina. Both Nicholas and Donald resided in Spencerville and are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. David also loved and enjoyed the privilege to be a Grandfather to Michael Trout and Leonel Lopez. His children and grandchildren were a source of pride and happiness that always made him smile. He was truly proud to have them call him, “Dad” and “Grandpa.”
In addition to his children and grandchildren, David leaves behind brothers Jack (Liz) Burnett of Brownsville, Calif., and Timothy (Mary) Burnett of Orange, Va. David was also blessed to have brothers-in-law Donald Ruff of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Lee Sudman of St. Marys, and also a son-in-law Patrick Wise of Detroit, Mich., who always called him “Pops.” Mr. Burnett’s countless nieces and nephews that fondly called him, “Uncle Dave,” will remember his smile, baseball caps and trademark cowboy hat forever.
David was a father, a brother, a son, and a friend to many. He will be missed by all those who knew him.
A private family service was held in Tolleson, Ariz., at his daughter’s residence.
