Dave "Salty" Horner, 71

Dave "Salty" Horner, 71, of 535 S. Chestnut St., Van Wert, died at 11:55  p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born on May 11, 1942, in Indianapolis, Ind., to parents Ward L. and Mary K. (Caldwell) Horner, both of whom preceded him in death.

He is survived by a son, Josh Horner, stepdaughters Michele Contreras of Van Wert, Lisa Kline of Van Wert, Christy Kline of Indiana, Kimberly (Josh) Bates of Van Wert and Casey Cornelius of Paulding, a stepson, Rory Bigelow of Grover Hill, two sisters, Mary Lou Roby of St. Marys and Bill Joe (Evelyn) Stephenson of Spencerville, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his former companion, Donella Lynn Cornelius, who died on Sept. 17, 2003. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ward and John Horner, and a sister, Janna Taylor.

He retired in 1996 from the Van Wert ODOT garage. Dave enjoyed being in the woods and hunting as well as riding his bike. He attended St. Marys Memorial High School.

He was a veteran of the Navy and served during the Vietnam War.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cowan and Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, the Rev. James C. Burns of Liberty Baptist Church officiating.

Calling hours will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Military rites by the combined honor guard of the VFW 5803 and by the American Legion Post 178 of Van Wert will follow the service.
