CSX Man Killed In Accident

September 9, 2011

WAPAKONETA — A Cincinnati man was killed Thursday morning after he was pinned between two CSX railcars.

According to a news release issued by Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon, Dennis A. Hemme, 59, of Cincinnati, was killed after he was pinned between two train cars on the CSX rail just south of Taylor Road in Auglaize County. The sheriff’s office received a phone call reporting the incident at 5:16 a.m. Thursday.

Upon their arrival, emergency responders found Hemme pinned between the cars. Auglaize County Coroner Thomas Freytag pronounced Hemme dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy.

A southbound train on the line apparently was having trouble crossing a small grade north of Botkins. A second engine was pushing the train to get it over the grade. After the train made it over the grade, the two were disconnected. Hemme reportedly was between the two when the train rolled back into the engine and pinned him.

CSX rail police are investigating the matter further because the incident took place on the railroad’s property. However, Solomon noted nothing at the scene appeared to indicate anything more than a work-related accident.

The Botkins Fire and Police departments and the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol assisted at the scene.
