Councilors Talk Efficiency

December 10, 2013

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys City Council met briefly Monday night. One topic of discussion was the Energy Efficiency Smart Schedule with American Municipal Power, Inc.

“They have yearly contests for people who turn in the oldest appliances,” Service and Safety Director Greg Foxhoven said. “They do have strong residential programs. Obviously, their focus is industrial (and) commercial (but) there are a lot of benefits for our homeowners.”

Foxhoven also updated councilors on the demolition of several local houses.

“Of the five houses that are coming down, four of those…are in the fourth ward,” he said. “The other house is in the first ward, on Augustus Street. This is just a small street that branches off Locust Street that a lot of folks aren’t aware of.”

The homes should be coming down soon, he said.

Councilors approved an emergency ordinance to make appropriations for current expenses and expenditures of the city of St. Marys, State of Ohio, during the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2014.

“Council passed the proposed budget…in August,” Foxhoven said. “This budget is $2.2 million higher than our preliminary budget,” Foxhoven said. “$1.5 million of that is for our power cost.”

The remaining money is distributed between 19 other accounts, he said, including $240,000 in additional costs to health care and $150,000 in capital improvement funds for a storage facility.

In other business, councilors approved an emergency ordinance authorizing the purchase of various materials, equipment and services for the departments for the city of St. Marys, including a bucket truck, street lights and steel poles for the electric department and computer software, a server and computer/data processing equipment for the engineering department among other items.

The next meeting of the St. Marys City Council will begin at 5 p.m. Dec. 30 at the City Building on Spring Street.
