Coldwater is headed back to familiar territory — Northeast Ohio — in search of the school’s third state championship and a measure of atonement for last year’s loss in the championship game.

The Midwest Athletic Conference’s Coldwater Cavaliers are headed back to the state title game for the second straight season and the sixth time in the past 14 seasons after the Cavs drubbed Hicksville 41-21 in a Division V state semifinal at Lima Stadium on Friday night.

While Coldwater is continuing that magic carpet ride to next Friday’s 11 a.m. Divison V title game, Elida had the rug pulled out from under it.

Elida’s magical playoff run ended when its defense couldn’t hold a 21-point second-quarter lead against Springfield Shawnee at Piqua’s Alexander Stadium. The Braves outscored the Bulldogs, 56-42, to advance to the Division III title game.

Shawnee intercepted Elida senior quarterback Reggie McAdams four times. McAdams had thrown just seven picks all season coming into the game.

Coldwater lost last year’s state title game to Youngstown Ursuline and look to made amends when it faces Kirtland next Friday.

Coldwater’s Jordan Chapin rushed for three first-half touchdowns and finished the night with 59 yards on 12 carries.

Coldwater junior quarterback Austin Bruns went 15-for-22 passing for 225 yards and a touchdown and the Coldwater offense had a pair of 13-play touchdown drives to key the 20-point win.

Coldwater’s pass defense stymied the run-oriented Aces, holding Hicksville QB Justin Miller to 9-of-21 passing for 67 yards. Ther Cavs picked him off twice. Miller did run for 130 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.

The Cavaliers blew things open in the second half with 40-yard touchdown reception by Caleb Siefring for the 28-7 first-half lead with 3:46 left in the second quarter.

A seven-yard Aaron Mestemaker touchdown reception from Bruns and a Drew Klosterman one-yard TD sealed the win for Coldwater.
