Carl B. Thomas, 97, of rural Rockford, died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at the Laurels of Shane Hill in Rockford, where he had resided since fall 2010.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1914, in Venedocia, to Howard and Ruth (Boroff) Thomas, and they preceded him in death.

On Nov. 17, 1938, he married Dorothy M. Armacost, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 28, 1970. On May 19, 1973, he married Ella Lee Pryer, and she preceded him in death in September 1981.

He is survived by three sons, John (Kay) Thomas of Rockford, Greg (Judy) Thomas of Rockford and Jim (Pam) Thomas of Fort Wayne; three daughters, Kay Graham of Spencerville, Sarah Sue Mescher of Fort Benning, Ga., and Donna (Robert) Stover of Xenia; two stepsons, Tome (Shirley) Pryer of Rockford and Ned (JoAnn) Pryer of Celina; a brother; a sister; a daughter-in-law; a sister-in-law; 21 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four children, Glen Thomas and infants Leonard, Linda and Joe Thomas; a stepson, Gary Pryer; a grandson; a great-grandson; four brothers; a sister; a daughter-in-law; three sons-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at W.H. Dick and Sons - Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina, with the Rev. Chip Steffy officiating. Burial will be held in Mercer Memory Gardens in Celina.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left at Dickandsonshellwarthfh.com.
