NEW BREMEN — Area students are gearing up to go back to school this week, gathering their school supplies, finishing up their summer reading and working on making a good first impression on their new teacher.

The New Bremen Public Library hosted a Meet the Teacher Craft Monday afternoon, where area students could make a water bottle hanger to place on a bottle of water with a piece of candy and a pink lemonade, fruit punch or cherry drink mix. The students were encouraged to give the craft to their teachers during Meet the Teacher Night on Monday.

Incoming seventh-grade student Tara Berning said she is looking forward to studying a particular subject this year.

“I’m looking forward to social studies,” Tara said. “My teacher is really funny.”

She noted she has had her social studies teacher, Mr. Messick, before.

“We had him as a substitute before, and he was really funny,” she said.

In addition to her time in Mr. Messick’s class, Tara said she is also looking forward to a school field trip she will take this year.

“We’re going to Cedar Point this year for band,” she said.

Alana Speelman, who will enter the fifth grade this year, said she is looking forward to spending time with the staff.

“I’m excited to meet all the teachers,” she said, noting she is in Ms. Kremer’s class.

Ashton Heitkamp, also an incoming fifth-grade student, said she is excited to meet her teachers, too.

“Meeting my three teachers,” she said, as she wrote “You have my attention” on her water bottle hanger for her teacher.

Incoming first-grade student Olivia Heitkamp will be in Ms. Clark’s class this year and said she is looking forward to spending time with her friends at her favorite part of the school day.

“Recess,” she said with a smile.

Marcus Speelman will be entering the second grade this year.

“I’m in Ms. Niemeyer’s class,” he said, noting he is not ready for school to start yet.

The 2012-13 school year kicks off on Wednesday.
