Cardinal Returns Home To Teach

September 4, 2013

NEW BREMEN — Born and raised in New Bremen, Lindsay Burkard is back home and working as a eighth-grade language arts teacher after going to college in Toccoa Falls, Ga.

“I’m really excited to be near my family in New Bremen,” Burkard said. “The schools here are really great ... I wasn’t anticipating getting hired at New Bremen, so I’m excited about that.”

Burkard has a lot of family in the area. Her parents are Brian and Stacie Burkard, her sister Hannah is a Cardinal senior, and her sister Stephanie was recently hired at the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce.

Burkard said she appreciates aspects of the village as an adult she didn’t notice while she was growing up. As a student, Burkard said she remembers thinking it was a small town with less to do.

“Now I know what a special place it is to live in,” she said. “It’s a good place to be. People take pride in where they live and you don’t see that everywhere.”

Burkard said she was inspired to become a teacher because she said she wanted to make a difference in people’s lives.

“When I thought about who had made a difference in my life, besides my parents, it was my teachers,” she said.

Burkard said she enjoys the age group she’s teaching, and the staff have been supportive. In the first few days,  she’s been impressed by the number of people who have stopped in to introduce themselves and offer support. The first time teaching can be scary and overwhelming, but as it turned out, the paperwork was the most difficult part.

“Just evaluating, going to meetings, keeping track of everything,” Burkard said. “I’m making a lot of lists.”

This is her first year teaching, and Burkard said she’s excited to share her love of grammar and reading with her students. She also wants to get to know them as people.

“I’m just excited about what I do,” Burkard said. “I come at what we’re talking about with enthusiasm. I take an interest in what’s going on in their lives.”
