Calvin L. Slattery, 83

Calvin L. Slattery, 83, of New Bremen, died at 2:38 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.  

He was born on Feb. 27, 1929, in Wapakoneta, the son of Eugene and Lillia (Weifenbach) Slattery, and they preceded him in death.

On July 10, 1953, he married Esther M. Fogt, and she preceded him in death on March 22, 2001.   

Survivors include his daughters, Kay (David) Shapiro of Cullowhee, N.C., and Kim (Dave) Dougherty of Cincinnati; four grandchildren, Sarah Shapiro of Atlanta, Ga., Aaron Shapiro of Cullowhee, N.C., Sean Dougherty of Calabasas, Calif., and Ryan Dougherty of Cincinnati; his sisters, Gereldine Metzger, of St. Marys and Imogene Mox of Delphos.

He was preceded in death by four siblings, Dana Slattery, Byron Slattery, Althea Ruedebusch and Mary Jane Scheufler.

Mr. Slattery was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen. He was a member of the F&A Masonic Lodge of St. Marys and the Scottish Rite of Dayton. He was also a member of American Legion Post 241 of New Bremen.

He served with the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers during the Korean War, building bridges in Korea.

He was a 1947 graduate of Blume High School of Wapkoneta. He retired from the Minster Machine Co., where he had been a cost accountant.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, with the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.  

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of services on Sunday at the funeral home.
