California Man Killed In Mercer County Crash

CELINA — A California man was killed early this morning in a single-vehicle crash near U.S. 127 in Mercer County.

In a news release issued to The Evening Leader, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said deputies are investigating a traffic fatality that occurred on Carthagena Road at U.S. 127.

Deputies were dispatched at 1:43 am today to U.S. 127 at Carthagena Road in reference to an injury accident.  Through the investigation, deputies determined a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse, driven by Thomas J. Collins III, 52, of Kettering, was eastbound on Carthagena Road, when he failed to stop for the stop sign at U.S. 127. The vehicle continued eastbound, striking an earthen embankment and coming to rest inside a cemetery.

Collins as well as a passenger inside the vehicle, Charles E. Brown Sr., 25 of Columbus, were transported by St. Henry to Mercer Health Hospital, Coldwater. Another passenger inside the vehicle, Arjun Prabhakaran, 24, of Riverside, Calif., was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.  Deputies were assisted at the scene by members of St. Henry and Coldwater EMS as well as units from the Chickasaw Fire Department.
