Brown hurdles to 3rd, Walker 4th in the shot put for St. Marys at WBL meet

WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys track and field team turned in five top-six finishes on the second day of the Western Buckeye League championships on Friday night at Harmon Field in Wapakoneta.

The St. Marys girls team finished ninth with 16 points.

The Roughrider boys team finished 10th with 11 points.

The Celina girls team won the WBL crown in runaway fashion with 174 points. Shawnee was second with 83 points.

Van Wert won a closely-contested boys championship race. The Cougars won with 89 points and won the meet’s final event — the 1600 meter relay — despite having the title sewed up beforehand.  O-G took second with 74 points.

St. Marys top finishers

St. Marys junior Brennan Brown finished third in the boys 300 meter hurdles. Brown finished with a 41.21-second time. He took a lead into the final 100 meters of the race, but was passed by Celina’s Logan Laux, who won with a 40.99-second time, Blake VanVorce of Bath (41.14 seconds).

St. Marys senior Sarah Walker finished fourth in the girls shot put with a put of 33 feet, one inch.

The Riders will compete in the Division II district track meet next Tuesday and Friday at Fostoria High School.
