BOYS SOCCER: St. Marys and Celina play to scoreless tie

September 18, 2012

ST. MARYS — Like the ominous-looking clouds surrounding the soccer field at West School on Monday night, the St. Marys boys soccer team threatened for much of the evening.

The rain ended up being harmlessly light, and the Roughriders never could put in that goal against a winless Celina squad.

St. Marys and Celina played to a 0-0 draw in the Grand Lake St. Marys rivalry match on Monday night.

The Roughriders, who received votes in the Division II Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association poll on Monday, put 16 shots on goal and clanged the crossbar and post, but nothing would go in for St. Marys Head Coach Dave Ring’s Roughriders.

“The headers were perfect,” Ring said. “We beat the guy backdoor and it didn’t go in. We take the shot front door and it hits the post...The opportunities were there, we dominated the opportunities to beat this team and didn’t do it.”

Celina recorded its first shutout in a season that has yet to produce a victory.

“St. Marys had chances and put pressure on us, but fortunately for us they didn’t get one,” Celina head coach Bruce Strine said. “Both teams played extremely hard and it was fun.”

St. Marys moves to 6-0-2 following Saturday’s 3-1 win over Lima Central Catholic and Monday’s tie. The Riders are 2-0-2 in the Western Buckeye League and part of a five-team race for the league title.

Celina “came in with a plan to tie us and congratulations,” Ring said. “They weren’t dangerous to score and we were and we just didn’t do it. The effort was fine. The tactics were fine. Hats off to Celina. It’s a rivalry game and you know they’re going to come in and play with everything they’ve got.”

Celina kept a St. Marys team averaging 4.7 goals per match heading into Monday to nothing.

“We tried to focus on not stabbing as much and keeping them in front and force them to pass it up,” Strine said. “Even in that, they had great looks.”
