BOYS SOCCER: New Knoxville tops Indian Lake, 4-2

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville soccer team finished off Monday’s win with a flourish.

Goncalo Branco’s three goals — including one in the final minutes — led the New Knoxville soccer team to a 4-2 win over Indian Lake on Monday.

The Rangers put the match away with 2:43 left on Branco’s goal, which was assisted by Caleb Yeats.

“For a change we were the team that scored the late goal and closed things out, which is kind of new for us,” New Knoxville head coach Tony Hunt said. “We only used 13 in our rotation and we kept fighting.”

The Lakers drew to within 3-2 with a penalty kick off of a handball in the box with 24:24 left in the second half.

New  Knoxville keeper Dean Frankenberg made six saves and kept the game at 3-2 late in the second half with some leaping saves near the net.

“We got the penalty down there and they got to within a goal and we didn’t fold up. We got stops. That was great to see.”

New Knoxville had 14 shots on goal. Indian Lake put 13 shots on goal.

Alex Thompson tied the game at 1-1 with 21:46 left in the first half.

Branco put the Rangers ahead for good with a goal with 7:33 left in the first half.

Branco scored again with 32:32 left in the second half to put the Rangers up 3-1.
