ST. MARYS — Fort Recovery held the St. Marys boys basketball team without a point in the second quarter to build a big lead and coast to a 58-43 season-opening win on Murotech Court at the Horseshoe on Friday night.
St. Marys recovered with a strong second half that included 37 points put on the scoreboard, but by then Fort Recovery had a lead that at times reached 20 points.
Returning Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year Wade Gelhaus shook off a slow 1-for-5 start from the floor and finished the game with 21 points. Elijah Kahlig added 19 points for the defending MAC champs.
"We return a lot of kids with experience," Fort Recovery head caoch Brian Patch said. "Every kid is going to go through that first game jitters and bugs and things, but you hope your experienced kids don't go through it as long as the other kids do."

Fort Recovery held the Roughriders to 2-of-19 shooting in the first half.
"We had some good looks," St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said. "I thought our shooters panicked. We didn't run half court well enough. They just panicked. I was happy with the way we defended them until the last two or three minutes."
St. Marys (0-1) solved Fort Recovery’s full-court pressure in the third quarter. The Riders roared out to 13-5 run to start the second half. St. Marys went 8-of-12 from the floor in the third quarter.
Much of that producation came from sophomore 6-foot-4 center Quinn Zaerr, who 6-of-8 from the floor in the second half. Zaerr finished the game with 14 points.
Garet Fleddderjohann shook off a tough first half shooting and finished the game with a team-high 16 points.
Jarrett Taylor added eight points for the Riders.
St. Marys will travel to St. Henry on Friday, Dec. 7 for a 6:30 p.m. JV tip-off in Mercer County.View more articles in:
