MINSTER — Carter Bowman wasn’t thrilled with a tie, even if it was for the best score on the course on Wednesday.
Bowman finished tied for medalist at the Auglaize County Invitational at Arrowhead Golf Club, but the St. Marys sophomore standout golfer was still kicking himself about how he finished down the stretch.
“It’s medalist, but it could’ve been a whole lot better,” Bowman said.
Bowman bogeyed two his final three holes to tie with Wapakoneta’s Caleb Acheson with a three-over par 75. He was hoping for a two-man playoff to make amends but had to settle for co-medalist.
Bowman shot a 39 on the front nine holes and went even par 36 on the back nine holes.
“I just couldn’t buy a putt early today,” Bowman said. “It could’ve been better. I was in that group with the guys I needed to beat and it got to me.”
Still, it’s a strong start for Bowman, who earned first team All-Western Buckeye League honors last fall as a freshman and dominated his age division this summer in the Lima Junior Golf Association circuit.
As a sophomore, he’s hoping to take the next step and be able to finish off tournament like this one.
Bowman said playing the same course twice in two days helped him cut seven strokes off Tuesday’s 82 at the Cardinal Invitational.
“I knew where to put my drives off the tee and knew the speed of the greens,” he said.
Also starting the season strong is the Midwest Athletic Conference’s Minster Wildcats, who shot a team score of 318 to capture an invitational title for the second straight day at Arrowhead Golf Club.
Xavier Francis and Austin Brackman shot a pair of 77s to lead the way for the Wildcats. Freddie Purdy shot an 80, John Burke had an 84, Josh Tumbusch addded an 85 and Matt Trushaw carded a 94.
New Bremen finished second, two shots in back of Minster with a 320 score. Darin Bergman led New Bremen withan 84, Josh Tumbusch addded an 85 and Matt Trushaw carded a 94.
