CELINA — Wapakoneta's Caleb Acheson never appeared to be in control on any of the four sudden death playoff holes to decide second place at the Celina Bulldog Invitational at Fox's Den on Friday.

He was the last of the four players standing four playoff holes later thanks to his stellar short game and scrambling ability, however.

"Probably about a zero percent chance," Acheson said with a smile when asked what kind of a chance he thought he had when he shanked his drive about 100 yards off the 10th tee to start the four-man playoff for second place.

"I wasn't upset. It's a short hole and I knew I could still make par," said Acheson, who was one of four to shoot a three-over par 75.

Make par he did. Acheson hit a solid shot to within 50 yards of the hole, cozied a wedge to within 15 feet shortside of the hole and plopped in the putt. Acheson pumped his fist at the unlikely par save.

Three holes later Acheson nailed down second place when Van Wert's Jacob Brake missed a short par putt on the 10th green that would have extended the playoff.

"I had to grind the whole day," Acheson said.

Acheson said the keys to the day were the two birdies he made on the first par 3s on the front and back nines.

"I'd been struggling with par 3's lately, so to go two-under on those was big," Acheson said.

Acheson wasn't the only local finishing second.

The Minster boys golf team took second in the 22-team invite on the sprawling course in Celina with a team score of 325, second only to Kalida and its 307.

Minster was again led by Xavier Francis, who fired a 79. Freddie Purdy shot an 83, John Burke carded a 79, Josh Tumbusch had an 84 and Austin Brackman shot an 86.

Celina shot a 337 team score, with Ryan Miller leading the way with a 76. Alex Ray shot an 82, Jenkins had an 86 and Kaleb Kuhn shot a 93.

Wapakoneta shot a 332 as a team. Along with Acheson's 75, Crow shot a 79, Wayman shot an 83, and Josh Apple carded a 95.

St. Marys finished with a 368 as a team. Carter Bowman paced St. Marys with an 80. Colin Burke had a 92, Cobain Applegate shot a 93 and Kyle Kiefer had a 103.
