BOYS BASKETBALL: Versailles rolls past Minster

February 4, 2012

VERSAILLES — Versailles  rolled past Minster 69-50 in a  Midwest Athletic Conference contest on Friday night.

Versailles came out ready right from the start as the Tigers opened the game on an 8-0 run, courtesy of three-pointers by Mitchell Campbell and Chad Winner, along with a basket by freshman Kyle Ahrens.

Minster’s Ryan Hoying hit a three-pointer to end the Tiger run, but Versailles led 8-3 with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter.

“You can’t get  off to the start that we got off (to) on the road in this league,” Minster head coach Mike Lee said. “That was imperative that we needed to have an answer. Not only did we not shoot the ball well early, but we were giving up easy opportunities at the other end and that combination was just lethal.”

Several basket exchanges followed before the Tigers ended the quarter on a 4-0 run, thanks to buckets by Jacob Heitkamp and Aaron McNeilan.

Versailles led 16-7 after one quarter of play.

Things would soon get a whole lot worse for Minster as Versailles opened the second quarter on a 17-0 run, thanks to a three-pointer and three baskets (including a dunk) by Ahrens, a basket and corresponding free throw by Zach Niekamp, two free throws by McNeilan and a three-pointer by Winner.

Minster’s Brandon Hoying hit a three-pointer to end Versailles’ run, but Winner immediately responded with a three-pointer of his own for the Tigers, who led 36-10 with 2:46 still remaining in the first half.

Versailles led 42-17 at halftime and still led by 21 after three quarters.

“You’re not going to make up (a 25-point halftime deficit) in a matter of 3,4,5,6 minutes,” said Lee. “You’ve got a goal in mind, which we didn’t reach by the end of the third quarter.”

Minster outscored Versailles 33-27 during the second half, but it was too little too late.

“We saw some fight in our kids,” said Lee. “They kept battling and we had it down to 12,13 points at one time and considering how much that we had to battle just to get to that point (it was good), but you don’t get ‘W’s’ for that.”

Campbell and Ahrens each scored 19 points for Versailles, while Winner added 17.

Adam Niemeyer led Minster with 12 points. Doug Huber added 9, while Poeppelman, Ryan Hoying and Brandon Hoying each scored 8.

Minster will travel to Jackson Center tonight.

“Hopefully we can take away a little bit of the positive, but it certainly doesn’t get any easier because we head right to Jackson Center tomorrow night,” said Lee.
