BOYS BASKETBALL: St. Marys hangs with state-ranked Defiance, but falls, 77-71

January 28, 2012

DEFIANCE — The St. Marys boys basketball team gave the Western Buckeye League’s top team all it could handle, but a 30-point night from Tory Guilliam helped Defiance get past a feisty Roughrider squad, 77-71.

The Roughriders got into a shootout with the unbeaten Bulldogs and stayed with them almost shot-for-shot, hitting 10 three-pointers.

St. Marys led 17-16 after one quarter and trailed 33-32 at the half. It was still a one-point game heading into the fourth quarter before Defiance outscored the Roughriders 25-20 in the fourth.

St. Marys senior forward J.D. Meyer scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Riders, who fell to 5-9 and 1-4 in the WBL.

Guilliam buried five 3-pointers in his 30-point night for a Defiance offense that turned the ball over just nine times to St. Marys’ 18 miscues.

St. Marys’ Garet Fledderjohann hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 points. Austin James’ three treys gave him nine points and Dustin Fisher also had nine.

St. Marys reached the 70-point barrier for the third time this season. The Riders won the other two games. It’s the first time St. Marys had scored 70 points in a game and lost since losing to Wapakoneta 80-77 in January of 2008.
