ROCKFORD — The St. Marys boys basketball team headed into the new year on a high note once again.

The Roughriders evened up their record for the season and won the Chatt Insurance Holiday Tournament at Parkway for the third straight year with a 71-62 victory over the host Panthers on Friday night.

“We’re 4-4 and it’s a good way to finish the end of the year,” St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said.

St. Marys junior point guard Garet Fledderjohann scored 19 points and earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award after the game. Fledderjohann scored a combined 36 points in the Riders’ two games at Parkway in wins over River Valley on Thursday  and the Panthers on Friday.

St. Marys shined from long distance range, as the Riders went 8-for-14 from beyond the arc.

Austin James exploded in the fourth quarter  and scored 16 points with a 4-for-5 night from three-point range.

“Austin James came in and had a heck of a game,” Hegemier said.

J.D. Meyer had 16 points and seven rebounds. Dustin Fisher was perfect from the floor and the charity stripe as he scored 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting and 4-of-4 on free throws.

St. Marys shot just a smidge under 50 percent on 25-of-51 shooting.

Parkway’s Riley Bransteter led all scorers with 21 points.

“We played a good first quarter and then in the second quarter we started the quarter by turning the ball over four times and then missing a lay-up. I warned this team that they were going  to play. I know Coach Snyder is going to make his kids play hard and bust their tails,” Hegemier said.

Will Snyder was the junior varsity coach at New Knoxville until taking the Parkway head coaching position this season.

Parkway fell to 1-7 on the season.

Joining  Fledderjohann on the all-tournament team was J.D. Meyer and Parkway’s Bransteter and Derek Luth.
