COLDWATER — It was a classic tournament basketball game at Coldwater Wednesday evening that had a little bit of everything and in the end it was a layup by Elliott Westerbeck of New Bremen that gave the Cardinals a 58-56 double overtime victory over the Marion Local Flyers in the Division IV sectional semifinal game.

The Cardinals (13-8) will play St. Henry in the sectional final on Friday in the second game. St. Henry defeated Waynesfield-Goshen 67-31. Marion Local ends their season at 11-10.

“That was a classic game,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “I haven’t been around here a long time but that has to be as good as it gets here. Two teams who competed their tails off. We get up 13 points in the third quarter and they punch us right back. It was just kids making plays for both teams at the end and thank God we made one more play at the end.”

New Bremen brought the ball down and ran the clock for the final shot and Westerbeck got open for a layup with 3.5 seconds left for a 58-56 lead. A three-point shot by Lee Pierron just rimmed out giving New Bremen the victory.

Aaron Clune led New Bremen with 19 points and Derek Bornhorst had 17 points.

ST. HENRY 67, WAYNESFIELD-GOSHEN 31

St. Henry’s large size and deep bench was too much for Waynesfield-Goshen to compete with.

The Redskins rolled to a 67-31 win over W-G in a Division IV sectional semifinal Wednesday at the Palace in Coldwater.   St. Henry improved its record to 17-4. Waynesfield-Goshen finished the season 6-15.

St. Henry roared out to a 32-8 lead at the break.

Junior center Kyle Stahl led the way for the Redskins with 15 points and eight rebounds.
