BOYS BASKETBALL: New Bremen and Minster pick up wins
NEW BREMEN 48, MARION LOCAL 47
MARIA STEIN — Derek Bornhorst of New Bremen calmly sank two free throws with 6.5 seconds left in the game to defeat the Marion Local Flyers 48-47 Friday night in a MAC contest played at the Hanger in Marion Local.
Despite separate scoring droughts of five minutes and seven and a half minutes and a 10-for-21 performance at the free throw line in the second half, the Cardinals pulled out an important MAC win with the free throws that mattered most.
In the game the Cardinals were 16 of 31 from the line in the game., while Marion Local was 15 of 23 from the line.
“We struggled at the line tonight,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “We had the right players at the line.”
Bornhorst scored a game-high 19 points for New Bremen.
Marion Local felt like it let one get away.
“We had them in two scoring droughts,” Flyers head coach Kurt Goettemoeller said. “In the first quarter we had them down 9-2 and they were not scoring. We changed our offense up a little bit, but with the new stuff we were running we started turning the ball over and that allowed them to hang around and I thought they controlled the middle part of the game.”
The Cardinals (9-4, 4-1) entertain Delphos St. John’s next Friday, while Marion Local (5-6, 1-3) hosts Franklin Monroe tonight.
MINSTER 45, COLDWATER 34
MINSTER — Minster snapped a three-game losing streak, defeating Coldwater 45-34 in a Midwest Athletic Conference match-up on Friday night.
The Wildcats bounced back from losses against Ft. Loramie, Ft. Recovery and Anna.
“Naturally, we kind of addressed all week that (I wasn’t) very pleased that we faced two teams that were very, very hot (and) very, very good last weekend,” said Minster head coach Mike Lee. “When you’re struggling offensively like we have been for most of the year, you can’t give up — our margin for error is just so small. We just stressed all week in practice and the kids naturally carried that over from practice into tonight. It was just a solid defensive effort.”
Adam Niemeyer led Minster with 11 points. Poeppelman and Wolf each added eight.
Austin Bruns scored a game-high 16 points for Coldwater, while Mark Brunet scored 6 and Brandon Wolters added 5.
Minster will travel to Wapakoneta tonight.
