BOYS BASKETBALL: Minster tops St. Marys in half-court battle

February 12, 2012

MINSTER — Offensive rebounds and easy baskets meant everything in a low-possession, low-shooting percentage contest between Minster and St. Marys on Saturday night.

Minster got more of both.

The Wildcats downed St. Marys 50-42 with a steady infusion of second-chance points and backdoor lay-ups to go with some stingy defense.

“In a game that we knew was going to be tough and low possessions, a 4-0 or a 6-2 run was huge in this game and we had a couple of those in the third quarter,” Minster head coach Mike Lee said.

The Wildcats have no problems playing slowed down games. Minster is 6-4 in games in which the combined score was under 100 points this season and has won its last three in those under-100 contests.

Minster junior Devon Poeppelman scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, who Wildcats improved to 9-9 on the season with a double weekend of wins over New Knoxville and the Riders. Minster has won four of its last six games.

Minster dominated the offensive glass with 11 offensive rebounds despite being without leading rebounder Doug Huber (who averages more than seven rebounds per game).

Things opened up in the fourth quarter, as both teams scored 17 points apiece. Minster kept its lead by getting easy baskets on backdoor cuts for easy lay-ups.

“We didn’t call some picks and they got them,” St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said.

St. Marys fell to 5-12 and lost its fifth straight game.

J.D. Meyer led St. Marys with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Austin James added 12 points.

Minster hosts St. Henry on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and wraps up its season on Friday, Feb. 24 at Marion Local at 6:30 p.m. before starting its tournament.

The Roughriders travel to Van Wert on Friday night at 6 p.m. and host Sidney Lehman on Saturday at 6 p.m. in a home finale. The Riders wrap up the regular season on Feb. 24 at Shawnee before starting their tournament run.
