CELINA — RC boat racers gathered at Eastview Park in Celina over the weekend for two days of fun and racing at the Can Am Summer Shootout.
Vince Amore II, of Gas RC Products, a sponsor of the event, said the Can Am Summer Shootout, an International Model Power Boat Association (IMPBA) event, attracts racers from across the region.
“We have participants from Indiana, we have participants from Ohio, some from London, Ontario, the Detroit metro area,” he said.
The event featured several classes, including B, D Hydro, Sport 40 Hydro, 1/8 Scale, Unlimited Hydro, LSG Mono, LSG Cat, LSG Sport Hydro and Thunderboat and RTR. The race attracted approximately 30 participants and 90 boats. Though attendance has dropped in recent years, Amore said races are still held for those who can make it.
“With the economy, attendance has been down, but we’re still going and trying to keep the hobby alive,” he said.
Amore thanked local ambassadors Dan Kramer and Tom Sadler, in addition to Celina officials and residents, for making the event possible.
“It’s a great site,” he said. “For them to close down a facility like this for us is great.”
He noted the welcoming atmosphere Celina residents give the RC racers.
“We’re very thankful that the city of Celina lets us come here to do this,” he said. “We’re very fortunate to have a town that welcomes us like this.”
When the race comes to Celina each year, Amore said participants enjoy spending some time and money at local shops and restaurants.
“We’re welcomed into town and we like to spend our money at all the local shops, restaurants and taverns,” he said.
In addition to racing and socializing, participants also enjoyed a selection of prizes from a raffle and food served by the Celina Area Visiting Nurses.
