ST. MARYS — Shawnee made a lot of shots in the third quarter and the Indians usually corralled the ones that did miss the mark in a 54-34 win over the St. Marys girls basketball team on Thursday at Memorial High School.

Shawnee (2-4, 1-1 WBL) grabbed 18 offensive rebounds in the game and exploded for 25 points in the third quarter to win its first Western Buckeye League game.

“It seemed like every time they took a shot and missed that first shot, they got that second chance and were able to put it in. That’s what killed us,” St. Marys head coach Kelly Fulmer said. “We have to get better at boxing out and we have to recognize that rotation and making sure we’re boxing somebody out in the third and fourth quarters.”

Shawnee went 10 of 15 from the floor in the third quarter and guard Kaitlyn Gronas knocked down three of four 3-pointers in the period. Gronas finished with a game-high 15 points and was four of eight from beyond the arc.

St. Marys' Lee Ann Bertke scored a team-high 14 points on 7 of 11 shooting with five offensive rebounds.

“Lee played excellent,” Fulmer said. “She’s a senior, she was motivated and ready to go. She got the ball and was strong with it and scored some basket. It’s nice to have a senior step up and do something like that.”

Erika Angstmann added nine points, Reagan Aller and Mallory Kill scored four points apiece and Quincy Rable had two points. The Roughriders host Piqua on Saturday with a noon junior varsity tip-off.
