BASEBALL: Riders win 18th game, New Bremen beat Spencerville
FORT RECOVERY — The St. Marys boys baseball team clinched the most wins for a Roughrider baseball team in a season in 10 years with a 9-1 win at Fort Recovery on Thursday.
The Riders’ Nick Vogel went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and six runs batted in. He also started the game on the mound and earned the win.
Codie Deaton finished the game in relief.
D.J. Manning went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Adam Neal went 2-for-4 wiht a double and a run batted in, Michael Huber finished the game 2-for-4.
St. Marys, which improved to 18-7 on the season, wraps up its season on Monday at Ottawa-Glandorf at 5 p.m..
NEW BREMEN 13, SPENCERVILLE 5
NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in a 13-5 win over Spencerville on Thursday — two days before the Cardinals’ key conference-ending game.
Ethan Elshoff went 3-for-3 at the plate. Aaron Clune drove in three runs and doubled. Doug Kremer drove in three runs and tripled.
New Bremen used four pitchers in the game. After Cody Wendel went the first two and 2-3 innings in which he gave up three runs, Clay Bertke worked two and 2-3 innings in which he gave up one run.
Trevor Kitzmiller and Alec Frideger each worked a scoreless inning.
Jared Rex went 2-for-3 at the plate for Spencerville. Matt Youngpeter was 2-for-4 and Joel Shimp was 2-for-4 at the plate for Spencerville.
New Bremen improved to 13-9 on the season. The Cardinals will wrap up their season with an important Midwest Athletic Conference resumption game on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Parkway. New Bremen can clinch a piece of the MAC baseball title with a win over the Panthers.
Versailles 8, New Knoxville 2
NEW KNOXVILLE — The Tigers earned an 8-2 win in a game resumed from May 4. Versailles led 5-2 through four innings when action picked up.
