BASEBALL: New Knoxville bows out of tourney

MINSTER — Four runs in the first inning by the Fort Recovery Indians was all they needed as they defeated the New Knoxville baseball team 4-1 in the opening game of the Division IV sectional tournament held at Hanover Street Park in Minster.

St. Henry defeated Marion Local 1-0 in the second game despite being no-hit until the seventh inning. Second-seeded New Bremen will face the Redskins this week in a sectional final.

The Rangers end their season at 2-14 and 0-6 in the MAC. Fort Recovery (8-14) will play Minster in the opening game of the sectional final on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Rangers had several chances in the game. In the first inning New Knoxville had runners on second and third with only one out, but Indian starting pitcher Jared Kahlig got a strike out and pop up to end the threat.

In the second game the St. Henry Redskins were held hitless by the Marion Local Flyers until the bottom of the seventh inning. Ryan Holliman led off with a walk and moved to second and scored the lone run of the game on a single by Derek Rindler to give St. Henry the 1-0 victory.

St. Henry will face New Bremen in the second game on Wednesday at approximately 7:30.

VERSAILLES 7, NEW BREMEN 4

VERSAILLES — Versailles  put the Midwest Athletic Conference baseball title up for grabs once again.

The Tiger scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to move past New Bremen with a 7-4 win on Saturday in a resumed game from earlier in the week.

Versailles’ win knots up the MAC standings.

New Bremen falls to 5-2 in MAC play. There are now five teams with two losses in MAC play, with Minster at 6-2, New Bremen at 5-2, Versailles at 5-2, Delphos St. John’s at 5-2,  and Parkway at 4-2.

New Bremen led 3-0 through two and a half innings, but Versailles scored a run in the bottom of the third, tied the game with two runs in the fifth and then scored four runs in the sixth.

The Cardinals travel to Fort Recovery on Tuesday at 5 p.m., play St. Henry in a sectional final at Minster at about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and host Spencerville on Thursday at 5 p.m.
