BASEBALL: Minster to play for back-to-back state titles on Saturday night

COLUMBUS — The Minster baseball team’s line-up cranked out 14 hits and wallopped Tinora 12-2 in a Division IV state semifinal.

Minster (25-6) will now play for back-to-back state championships when the Wildcats square off for the Division IV crown with Cuyahoga Heights (25-4)on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Huntington Park.

Minster junior shortstop Devon Poeppelman went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in to lead the way.

Minster scored eight earned runs off Tinora starting pitcher Tyler McKenney, who had been 10-0 entering the game,  in three and 1-3 innings.

“It just seemed like everybody was seeing the ball really well out of his hand today,” Poeppelman said. “Everyone made hard contact.”

Armed with the big lead early, Minster’s big senior starter Doug Huber mowed down Tinora with a steady diet of strikes.

 Huber worked five innings, giving up just two hits and an unearned run. He struck out seven and threw 55 strikes out of his 86 pitches.

Minster scored five runs in the second inning and built up an early 6-0 lead.

Doug Huber went 3-for-5 at the plate. Jay Eilerman was 2-for-4 with three runs scored with an RBI. Niemeyer also went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Elson scored two runs and drove one in.

Tinora was bounced from the state semifinals for the second straight season. The Rams lost a final four game in Division III in 2011.

Minster now plays Cuyahoga Heights, which defeated Berlin Hiland 6-4 in the late game on Friday night. Cuyahoga Heights’ Lane Austin went 4-for-4 with five runs batted in in the victory.
