Barbara J. Smith, 83, of 817 Columbia St. in St. Marys, died at 10:10 a.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Otterbein, St. Marys.

She was born on May 30, 1929, in Muncie, Ind. to Ralph and Vivian (McMahon) Campbell.

On Nov. 1, 1952, in Lima, she married Claude “Pete” Smith, who died on April 25, 2002.

Survivors include a son, Michael Smith  of Lima; two daughters, Kathy (Dennis) Schwarck  of St. Marys and Susan (Dan Frysinger) Kolsky  of St. Marys; two sons, Tim (Michelle) Smith  of St. Marys and Harry (Karen) Smith  of New Bremen; 13 grandchildren, Christopher (Kristina) Smith, Julie Smith, Jeff Smith, Joshua (Nicolette) Kolsky, Katie (Brandon) Nevergall, Krystal (Ryan) Longsworth, Sarah Smith, Matthew Schwarck, Erika Smith, Abby Smith, Lucas Smith, Cassidy Smith and Olivia Smith; five great-grandchildren, Brandyn Smith, Aliyah Smith, Tucker Longsworth, Trace Longsworth and Brandy Nevergall; brother Ralph “Bud” Campbell  of Lima; sister Lorene (Harold) Keller  of Lima.

She was preceded in death by parents Ralph and Vivian Campbell; husband Claude “Pete” Smith; son Jeffrey Smith; sister Alice Sanders.

She was a 1947 graduate of Shawnee High School and 1950 graduate of St. Rita’s School of Nursing, both in Lima.

A registered nurse, she retired from JTDM Hospital in St. Marys.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and its UMC Women in St. Marys.

Her pastimes included camping, gardening, needlepoint, crocheting, and playing “Yahtzee.”

Above all, she was a caring and devoted mother and grandmother. She was dearly loved by all her family, who will cherish her memory forever.

Rites are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home (314 W. High Street Chapel) in St. Marys.

Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery, east of Spencerville.

Visitation will begin from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
