Area track teams sending athletes to state this week

DAYTON — They represent all four classes and they’ll represent the Roughriders at state track and field championships this weekend.

The St. Marys boys 4-by-200 meter relay team of freshman Eric Spicer, senior Will Walter, sophomore Austin Tester and junior Cam Swanson advanced to the Division II state track and field championships with a fourth-place finish in the event final at the University of Dayton’s Welcome Stadium on Saturday.

The Rider quartet turned in a 1:31.02 time for the final state spot.

The same St. Marys quartet narrowly missed out on advancing in the 4-by-100 meter relay, finishing fifth behind fourth-place Elida. St. Marys took the fifth spot by photo finish with a 45.063-second time — six one-thousandths of a second faster than Waynesville.

St. Marys’ relay will run its state prelim on Friday at 2:40 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University. The Riders will run in the first of two heats. The two heat winners and t he next five best times advance to Saturday’s final at 1:25 p.m.

The Division III state semifinals begin on Friday at 9;30 a.m. Minster and New Knoxville have a combined 24 athletes competing at state.
